When the statewide smoking ban takes effect, some local businesses say they could take a hit.

They're concerned that business from smoking patrons will drop if they don't have a place to light up.

But others say going smoke free is a gamble they are willing to make.

Private clubs like the American Legion are worried about the smoking ban affecting them, and hitting them hard, but only at first.

"Yes, but I think we'll survive and I think we'll carry on,” said Flint Council VFW Post President Scott Campbell.

He said he expects sales to climb again within months of the ban.

Come May 1, the VFW, along with every other club, restaurant and bar in Michigan must be smoke-free.
