Publication Date: 2010-04-30

Let's Celebrate Michigan's new
smokefree law this weekend!

Please join ANR, our members, and friends in supporting the implementation of the new smokefree law. Saturday, May 1st marks a historic step forward for healthier workers and communities all across Michigan.

What you can do to help celebrate:

Speaking up still matters. You can help by sharing positive feedback - early and often - and helping make the "opening weekend" (and beyond) a big success! Check out this list of the smokefree celebration events taking place throughout the state. Maybe there is one in your area?

Here are some ideas to keep in mind:

    • When you go to enjoy the clean air in restaurants, bars, bowling centers, try to write a positive comment on your bill in addition to voicing supportive feedback to the manager and staff. The written feedback on the tab can help ensure that management sees your comments at the end of the night.

    • Remember to tip well as you are leaving those positive comments. Big Tobacco created the myth that smokers tip more than nonsmokers, and this is something food servers and bartenders are going to be thinking about. Visualize 20% - not 15%.

    • Media covering the issue often want to look for conflict and controversy. So watch for opportunities to provide positive feedback. For example, provide positive feedback about the law in the comments section of online news articles, on your Facebook page, or by sending a nice letter to the editor of your local paper.

    • Of course, have fun!

For more information about the law, visit the Michigan Department of Health's Smokefree Law page. Also, check out the Michigan Campaign for Smokefree Air and their blog about the law.
