Volunteers hoping to initiate a state ballot measure to prohibit smoking in all indoor public places and places of employment will be collecting signatures at the North Dakota State Fair.

Smoke-Free North Dakota needs 13,452 supporters by Aug. 8 in order to get the measure on the November ballot. However, the group is aiming for about 18,000 signatures, since some of the signatures will inevitably be thrown out, said Chelsey Matter, chairwoman for Smoke-Free North Dakota’s sponsoring committee.

Volunteers from Bismarck, Minot and the surrounding area will gather signatures during the State Fair parade, which starts at 9:15 a.m. Saturday, and at the American Lung Association booth during the Excel Energy Family Day Festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

Matter said that 18 days into the campaign, the group had more than 10,000 signatures. Its next check-in is scheduled for Tuesday.

“We’re pretty confident we’ll be pretty close,” said Matter, who will be collecting signatures at the Street Fair in Fargo this weekend...
