New Year's Day 2013 will mark the five-year anniversary of smoke-free air for patrons and employees of Colorado's 40 casinos located in the cities of Black Hawk, Central City and Cripple Creek. More than 9,000 people are employed by Colorado's smoke-free casinos.

Casino employees are much happier and healthier since the smoke has cleared and ashtrays have been removed. Reduced health care costs, fewer sick days and improved employee morale are just some of the benefits of casino workplaces without toxic cigarette and cigar smoke.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) smokers die an average of 14 years sooner had they not smoked.

By not promoting smoking and keeping indoor air uncontaminated from secondhand smoke, the gaming industry and its employees benefit in the short and long run. Keeping casino customers healthy and not smoking could also result in 14 years of additional gaming revenue per non-smoker gambler.

Studies have concluded that 80% of gamblers are non smokers and that figure is likely to increase.

Many other gaming states have clean indoor air laws in effect...
