Smokefree Indoor Air Challenge Award Winners
Mississippi Award

Mississippi advocates receive this year's top award from ANR's Executive Director Cynthia Hallett in Jackson, MS.

And the winners are...

Americans for Nonsmokers’ Rights (ANR) announced the National Smokefree Indoor Air Challenge Award winners in Jackson, MS on August 14. Mississippi received the 1st place award for passing nine local smokefree laws in 2013.  Alabama and South Carolina tied for 2nd place, with Missouri, Louisiana and California all in a tie for 3rd place. You can view the press release on our website.

The winners are based on the analysis of all new laws enacted during 2013 that meet the ANR Foundation’s criteria for 100% smokefree bars, restaurants, and non-hospitality workplaces. The award is an acknowledgement of the important smokefree policy work that takes place at the local level.

A total of 646 U.S. cities and counties now have strong local laws to ensure 100% smokefree air in non-hospitality workplaces, restaurants, and bars. Check out the chart showing the increase in strong local smokefree ordinances over the years.
