Legislative Summary

AB1465—(marijuana cafes and lounges)—An Act relating to cannabis—Amended and passed Assembly Business and Professions Committee on 4/23

This bill would create an exemption in the California smokefree state law to allow marijuana smoking and vaping in licensed consumption cafes/lounges and in licensed retailers with a consumption cafe/lounge. This bill threatens to undermine smokefree protections throughout California by permitting marijuana smoking and vaping in venues that are currently required to be smokefree. A consumption cafe/lounge could not allow the sale or consumption of alcohol or tobacco on the premises, but food and non-alcoholic beverages may be prepared and sold onsite. A consumption cafe/lounge license would have to be granted, and the California Cannabis Bureau will have to set consumption cafe/lounge license regulations.
