A majority of voters approve a smoking ban of one sort or another, but the fate of a proposed 2006 ballot initiative to ban smoking in public areas statewide would still be up in the air. A statewide ban had support from 39 percent of those polled, while a city-by-city ban had 29 percent. Eight percent say they favor a county-by-county ban, but 23 percent say they don't want any restrictions at all.

A coalition of health organizations announced plans in November to push for a ballot measure that could create a statewide smoking ban, effectively stitching together the patchwork of cities that already restrict smoking.
