When it comes to smoking and public health, Minnesota has moved -- in just three decades -- from a leader to a laggard.

There is only one explanation: The state is in denial, pretending that smoking bans are about something other than public health. That rationalizing has to stop. It's well beyond time for legislators to take seriously their responsibility to protect the health and safety of Minnesota workers -- all workers.

That means passing a statewide ban on smoking in restaurants and bars -- and everywhere else workers are forced to breathe in the known carcinogen called environmental tobacco smoke...
