North Carolina, long known as one of the most tobacco-friendly states, has seen a strong push to limit smoking — and several health reports suggest that those efforts might be having an effect.
On Jan. 26. the N.C. Senate passed a widely debated ban that prevents members from smoking in the chamber, a measure the House passed in 2003.
“With all this business about secondhand smoke, it’s good for the Senate to set an example,” said Sen. Bill Purcell, D-Scotland.
