The state Senate approved a ban on smoking in virtually all public buildings Wednesday.

If approved by the House, and signed by Gov. Sonny Perdue, the bill would outlaw smoking almost everywhere except private homes, some hotel rooms and nursing homes.

The Senate approved the plan by a vote of 44 to 7.
