EDITORIAL: Smoking bans gain traction

Valdosta became a pioneer in Georgia when the city adopted a smoking ban. Legislators are weighing the benefits of enacting such a ban statewide,­ a move that The Times endorses as one of its editorial objectives for 2005.

The Senate has already passed the bill, with Sen. Tim Golden voting in favor of the ban. Now we call on the members of our local delegation in the House ­ Rep. Ellis Black, Rep. Ron Borders and Rep. Jay Shaw ­ to support and vote for Georgia’s smoking ban. Protecting the population from a harmful substance is their first responsibility as our elected officials.
