On Monday, New Jersey moved closer to approving a bill that would ban smoking in most public places. It is long overdue.

A state Senate committee passed a bill that now moves to the full Senate for consideration. It could vote on the bill this month. It should pass the ban quickly. And the Assembly should not wait until June to take up a companion bill. It is time for New Jersey to join the ranks of eight other states with smoking bans, including New York Massachusetts, Florida and California.

Smoking bans have come in small increments.
