Due to a publisher's error, local officials across the state previously thought they could not pass their own laws banning smoking in bars and restaurants, and instead had to follow a state law that allows smoking in such locales.

But recent discovery of the mistake, as well as an antismoking bill introduced in the state Senate Wednesday, has allowed lobbyists to turn on the heat to put Pittsburgh's smoky days in the past once and for all.

Since the mistake was discovered, lobbying organizations have asked municipalities around the state to consider enacting smoking bans in the workplace.

"We expect to see a lot of counties pursue smoke-free legislation," said Greg Hartley, assistant director of SmokeFree Pennsylvania. "Everyone deserves a safe workplace, whether it be a bar or a restaurant."
