The Senate scaled down the proposed “Colorado Clean Indoor Air Act” on Wednesday to a measure that would prohibit smoking in restaurants, cafes and other food-service establishments only.

The sharp narrowing of Denver Democratic Sen. Dan Grossman’s smoking-ban bill came in an amendment from Larimer County Republican Sen. Steve Johnson, who said he agreed with Grossman that “we should have smoke-free restaurants throughout the state.”

While some establishments provide separate smoking and nonsmoking sections, “we’ve all been to those restaurants and we know that doesn’t work,” he said.
