Anti-tobacco activists will kick off an effort next week to ban smoking inside all indoor public places in Ohio, including bars, restaurants, and some private clubs.

Volunteers intend to gather at polling places Tuesday to collect signatures of registered voters. Their goal is to get a statewide ban on the November, 2006, ballot, according to Stu Kerr, regional policy coordinator of Tobacco-Free Ohio and former Findlay health commissioner...

"We're starting a grass-roots effort to get clean indoor air throughout the state. We want people to vote on this statewide," he said. "All we're asking smokers to do is step outside."
