Legislators on Wednesday stubbed out a bill that would have required restaurant to completely cordon off their smoking section from nonsmokers.

That rejection came during the flurry of activity in advance of today's crossover deadline, when proposed laws that don't deal with taxes or fees must pass either the House or Senate to remain alive.

The two chambers each handled more than 50 bills Wednesday, ruling on legislation that governed everything from how much junk food is allowed in school vending machines to punishments for those who don't make way for emergency vehicles.
