Incumbent Gov. Ed Rendell would “consider” signing a public smoking ban, spokesman Chuck Ardo said. “But he doesn’t believe the Legislature would ever be inclined to send him such a bill,” he said.

A House committee is set to meet today to consider a bill expanding the list of places off-limits to smoking. Venues such as shopping malls, bingo halls, grocery stores, sports arenas and elevators would be smoke-free. Violators could face a $100 fine. Repeat offenders could be fined up to $500.
