The state's House Health and Human Services Committee remained deadlocked this week, 14-14, over a measure that would forbid smoking in a variety of businesses, including bars and restaurants, malls, grocery stores, sports arenas, convention halls and casinos. It also would extend to workplaces, requiring employees to leave the premises before lighting up.

Like the committee members, area business owners are torn about what such a ban could mean for traffic at establishments that now allow smoking.

"I know there are people who will have a hard time going without a cigarette," said Pat McDonough, owner of Valley Lanes bowling center in the Childs section of Carbondale Township. "If it does happen in our state, I'm expecting to be impacted, at least initially."
