Trend growing; some let guests light up at outdoor tables

Most recently in Greenville, two major restaurant groups have become smoke-free. The Stax restaurants went smoke-free May 1, while two restaurants owned by the Court Street Restaurant Group -- Soby's New South Cuisine and Restaurant O -- ended smoking in their respective bar areas in late April.

Coumos said the move to nonsmoking was also in response to customer feedback.

"We get more complaints than people actually complimenting us for having smoking," Coumos said. "We just figured it was the right thing to do. It was time."...

Neither Coumos nor Sobocinski could quantify the effect of the smoking-policy changes on their restaurants' receipts, but said customers' comments have for the most part been positive.

"From comments that I've heard from customers, it's been overwhelmingly positive," Coumos said. "For every one complaint, we've had nine compliments."
