Alabama voters would get to decide if they want to ban smoking in all public restaurants and bars in the state under a proposed constitutional amendment approved Tuesday by the Senate.

The Alabama Senate voted 26-7 to approve the proposed amendment that would ban all smoking in bars and restaurants, except on outside decks and patios. The measure now goes to the House.

The proposed amendment would permit smoking in private clubs.

"This bill may give some people a few more breaths by preventing them from smoking in bars and restaurants," said the bill's sponsor, Sen. Vivian Davis Figures
