Judge Deadra L. Jefferson of the Charleston County Court of Common Pleas handed down a ruling of summary judgment in favor of the Town of Sullivans Island in its lawsuit defending the towns recently-passed smoking ban ordinance.
She stated in her judgment the Town of Sullivans Island has the authority to protect the health and quality of life of its citizens by adopting a smoke-free ordinance affecting indoor public places. The judge also ruled the ordinance did not interfere with the intent of the 1996 Clean Indoor Air Act which allows the regulation of smoking in certain public places.
