Chairman John Vratil says the Senate Judiciary Committee plans to vote next week on a bill that would ban smoking in most public places.

The committee had a hearing today on the measure, which has the support of health care providers, public health providers and groups such as the Tobacco Free Kansas Coalition. Business owners voiced their opposition, worrying that it could drive away customers.

The ban would apply to most public places, including stores and restaurants. It also would apply to bars, except for "cigar-tobacco bars," where only drinks and tobacco products were sold. Private clubs and tobacco shops also would be exempt.
