Gov. Jim Doyle appeared Tuesday to soften his plan to banning smoking in all Wisconsin workplaces, including bars and restaurants, but Appleton's ban likely will remain in effect even so.

Doyle spokesman Matt Canter said the governor won't sign a bill that overrides existing bans like those in Appleton and Madison.
