Smoking will continue to be banned at veterans' clubs across the state. State senators rejected a proposal Wednesday to exempt branches of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion from the state's smoking ban.

Earlier this week, lawmakers took steps to make it harder for bars to get out of the ban. Smoking is still allowed in cigar bars where selling tobacco is a major part of their business. A House committee backed a proposal to limit that exemption to only bars that sell cigars, not cigarettes.
