The top Republican in the state Senate called on Gov. John Lynch and legislative leaders Friday to ban smoking within 50 feet of state buildings.

Senate Republican Leader Ted Gatsas of Manchester tried Thursday to attach a proposed smoke-free zone around state buildings into a bill that would ban smoking in restaurants and bars.

The Senate turned aside eight attempts to amend the bill and passed the ban that has Lynch's support.

The measure needs support of the House of Representatives before it would get to Lynch.
