An amended bill approved by the Senate Thursday would allow cities and counties to ban indoor smoking.

The amendment proposed by Camden Democrat Vincent Sheheen would give municipalities the authority to restrict or prohibit smoking in public buildings.

It was added to a bill banning smoking on any school property.

The proposal passed the same day a judge overturned Greenville's smoking ban, saying the state's smoking laws supersede anything local governments can do.

A half-dozen other local governments in South Carolina have banned workplace smoking.
