North Carolina could soon ban smoking in bars, restaurants and workplaces.

Under a bill discussed at a state legislative hearing this morning, most public places would have to go smoke-free by Jan. 1.

The only exceptions would be some hotel rooms, tobacco factories and shops and members-only clubs, such as Elks lodges, country clubs and some bars.

The bill is the second attempt by Rep. Hugh Holliman, a Democrat from Davidson County, in two years to ban smoking in public places in North Carolina.

During an hourlong hearing before a House judiciary committee, public health advocates, doctors, restaurant industry lobbyists and a minister argued for a broader ban. A property rights advocate and a tobacco company executive argued against the bill.

The committee will vote on the bill next week.
