The North Carolina House will consider a bill Tuesday that bans smoking in public places.

If it passes, the bill would ban smoking in all but a few places including private homes, tobacco shops and non-profit clubs.

Supporters of the measure said it would be a step in the right direction in protecting the health of state residents.

Opponents said it's their right to smoke and that it should be up to individual businesses to decide whether to allow smoking.

The smoking ban has been approved by a state House committee.
