Anti- Smoking Bill Stalls

A vote on a bill that would impose a broad ban on smoking in public places and businesses will be delayed from Tuesday until at least next week, a primary sponsor said. House Majority Leader Hugh Holliman (D-Davidson) said many House members remain undecided on whether to back the bill.

The bill would ban smoking in most restaurants, bars, offices and factories, with some exceptions. Rep. Holliman says many undecideds are trying to figure out whether health interests should be favored over the rights of businesses to decide what people can do on their premises.

House Bill 259 gained momentum last Tuesday when the House Judiciary Committee approved it by a 9-4 vote.
