State Sen. Vivian Davis Figures told members of the Mobile chapter of the Alabama Restaurant Association on Monday about her new bill that would ban smoking in most public places, including bars and eateries.

Many of the three dozen restaurateurs and economic development officials, who gathered for the event at the Original Oyster House, told the Mobile Democrat that they favored such a comprehensive ban since it would enforce standards statewide...

Figures, a proponent of 2003's Clean Indoor Air Act, said it's time for Alabama to promote better health by passing a comprehensive law that would apply to all public places.

Besides restaurants and bars, her bill covers workplaces, shopping centers, convention centers, theaters, sports arenas and common-use areas.
