Starting Jan. 1, smoking will be banned in all county buildings, including the Wake County Courthouse, following a measure unanimously approved by the board of commissioners Monday.

The ban takes advantage of a new law passed overwhelmingly by the state legislature in July that gives local governments the right to prohibit smoking on public property.

None of the seven commissioners smoke.

Smoking is already forbidden in the county jail and 14 buildings used by Wake's Human Services Department, which includes social services, health and mental health.
