For the first time, the American Cancer Society has decided to back a proposed state law, expected to be considered in the coming session of the Legislature, that would ban smoking in restaurants, workplaces and bars statewide...

Advocates of the ban, led by state Sen. Vivian Figures, D-Mobile, have worked without success for more than a decade for a tougher state law to protect the public from secondhand smoke.

State law bans smoking in government buildings but allows it in workplaces, as well as in restaurants that have a designated area for smokers.

There should have been no question about the need for a more restrictive law after a report from the U.S. surgeon general in 2006 found that there is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke.
