Suffolk may become the next city in Hampton Roads to consider a ban on smoking.
The City Council on Wednesday will debate a resolution that would ask the General Assembly to pass legislation allowing cities to decide for themselves whether to ban smoking in bars and restaurants.
City attorneys across the area say current state law blocks most smoking bans.
Gov. Tim Kaine has made anti-smoking laws a goal of this year's legislative session, which began last week.
