A legislative committee has rejected two proposals to water down the state's smoking ban.

The statewide ban began last month. It prohibits smokers from lighting up in most public places such as bars, restaurants and night clubs. The two bills voted down Wednesday exempted private clubs and veterans halls.

The proposals' supporters say lawmakers shouldn't impose their will on adults in private clubs, and membership in veterans organizations would drop.

Opponents contend the ban should be automatic because secondhand smoke is a health hazard.
