Smoking ban fans promise to fight on

Supporters of a statewide smoking ban say they'll try to get the measure through the Legislature next year.

The Assembly finished its work for the year early this morning without taking up the ban. The Senate was not scheduled to take it up on its final day of work today.

Supporters vowed to be back.

"We're not giving up," said Rep. Steve Wieckert, R-Appleton. "We're in for the long haul."

Gov. Jim Doyle has advocated for the ban for months, but it met with staunch opposition from the powerful Tavern League lobby.
