A statewide ban on smoking in public is one step closer to coming to a vote, as the state legislature is expected to take up the issue next week.

This is not the first time North Carolina legislators voted on the topic of banning smoking in public places. In 2007, a similar bill failed in the House by six votes. This year, the bill faces a legislature where democrats have a 16-seat majority in the House and a 10-seat majority in the Senate.

Some lawmakers started a new drive this session to require smoking bans in restaurants, public places and indoor work sites.
