Tell Michigan Leaders to Stop Delaying on Smokefree Air

Tell Michigan Leaders to Stop Delaying on Smokefree Air

Smokefree air laws are sweeping the country. Twenty-four states now have strong smokefree laws. As of October 1st, Montana bars and casinos are smokefree, and North Carolina’s bars and restaurants will be smokefree in less than 60 days – in the heart of “tobacco country.”

Widespread smokefree progress around the U.S. stands in stark contrast to Michigan, where lawmakers continue to delay and dither, setting the state farther behind the national smokefree norm on this basic public health protection. Polls show strong overwhelming support by Michigan voters for a comprehensive smokefree indoor air law. Smokefree laws are both good for health and good for business.

So, why do Michigan lawmakers continue to delay? Is the tobacco industry standing in the way of a strong law?

We here at ANR don’t know the answer to these questions, but maybe you can help find out. Smokefree supporters cannot be a silent majority. Ask the House Speaker and Senate Majority Leader why they aren’t moving this issue forward, and why Michigan residents must still endure toxic smoke-filled air in indoor worksites and public places.

What You Can Do

1. Please take a few minutes to contact Michigan's legislative leaders. Deliver a clear message to House Speaker Andy Dillon and Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop: Smokefree Air for Michigan NOW.

Tell them why you support a strong law NOW for Michigan that finally ensures that people have smokefree air inside workplaces and public places. No more delays.

Will you pledge to contact them within the next week? Hand-written letters, faxes, emails, and phone calls are most effective. After you send your note about why you care about the issue, please be sure to ask your family members, friends, and co-workers to speak up too.
