Smoking ban fans launch campaign

The battle over whether South Dakota's bars, restaurants and casinos will be smoke-free got a kick-start Thursday evening as proponents of the ban rallied volunteers to help with the campaign ahead of the November election.

The American Cancer Society, which favors the ban, held an open house Thursday at its office in Sioux Falls for volunteers and anyone interested in the movement.

A grass-roots campaign focusing on face-to-face interaction will be the primary method used to grab voters' attention, said Erik Gailkowski of the American Cancer Society in South Dakota.
