Since Democratic Sen. Vivian Figures of Mobile was first elected to the Legislature 15 years ago, her goal has been to pass a bill that would ban smoking in most public places in Alabama.

She has come close several times as the bill passed the Senate and died in the House.

On several occasions she has killed the bill because it had been amended so heavily she felt it had lost its purpose...
