BISMARCK -- The fairest and most successful ban on workplace smoking has no exemptions, health advocates told legislators Thursday as debate opened on a bill to create a statewide law.

"How could one group of workers be asked to work in an unsafe environment while others are protected?" American Heart Association spokeswoman June Herman asked the House Government and Veterans Affairs Committee.

She and state Health Department Tobacco Prevention Director Kathleen Mangskau said they want House Bill 1030 passed, but would prefer it without exemptions to the ban for bars, private clubs and some other locations.
