South Dakota cities and counties should not be given authority to control tobacco products, lawmakers decided Monday.

A bill killed 5-2 by the Senate Local Government Committee would have given limited authority over tobacco distribution, sales and advertising to local officials.

The state would have continued to set minimum regulations for tobacco products, but cities and counties could have enacted stricter measures.
