Backers of a bill that would allow local governments to ban public smoking made their case Wednesday at the Statehouse even as senators prepared to snuff out the legislation.

Anti-smoking advocates unveiled a poll showing that 71 percent of Iowans surveyed support local ordinances prohibiting smoking in indoor venues, including restaurants and bars. But a bill clearing the way for those rules is stuck in the Senate Local Government Committee...

If no action is taken, the bill will die for the second consecutive session. Critics, including Senate Republican Leader Stewart Iverson of Dows, argue that business owners, not government, should have the final call on whether to allow smoking.
