A statewide smoking ban is likely to head to the governor's desk by the end of the week, even if it takes a weaker version to win approval, lawmakers said Monday.

The House and Senate have already passed separate smoking bans, but the Senate version is far tougher, making it a crime to light up even in bars.

The House approved a smoking ban last week, but not before members loaded it up with exemptions for bars and restaurants that serve only adults. Some wondered if the vast differences could be rectified by the end of this week, when the legislative term ends and all unpassed bills die for the remainder of the year.
