A statewide smoking ban in bars, restaurants, offices and other public places appears doomed before lawmakers utter a syllable of debate.

It's already clear that a majority of senators oppose Senate Bill 207, introduced Tuesday, which would dramatically curtail smokers' ability to light up anywhere indoors in Colorado.

The Colorado Clean Indoor Air Act would ban smoking indoors. Exemptions would be granted to private homes, personal cars (not if the vehicle is used to transport children), 25 percent of the rooms at a hotel and tobacco shops.
