While they said they were thrilled Minnesota's two biggest counties snuffed out smoking in restaurants Thursday, key House members said a statewide smoking ban still is needed.

"This issue isn't if we are going to have a statewide smoking ban. The issue is when," Rep. Doug Meslow, R-White Bear Lake.

Backers of a statewide ban experienced a setback to their push last month when a House committee rejected the measure. But they and their allies in the Senate, where a ban awaits a vote on the floor, say there are still ways to revive the issue this year.
