Big government and noisy minorities should not be able to dictate whether Nebraska businesses can allow smoking on their premises, Sen. Pat Bourne of Omaha said Thursday.

Bourne offered those views during first-round debate on a proposal (LB480) that put a statewide ban on smoking in bars and restaurants where food is served.

Bourne argued that those who don't want to smoke tobacco, or be exposed to second-hand smoke, can choose not to frequent businesses that allow it...

Bourne proposed amending the bill to prohibit local governments from adopting anti-smoking ordinances that would be more restrictive than state law.
