A bill making its way through the Florida Legislature would make it easier for bars that serve food to allow smoking -- if the bar is individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The measure has aroused opposition from the American Lung Association, which fears the bill would weaken the state's ban on smoking in restaurants.

The bill, filed in the state House of Representatives by Rep. Ken Sorensen, R-Key Largo, could apply to Key West landmark Sloppy Joe's, which is applying for National Register listing.
