The City Council has approved a smoking ban slightly stricter than the new state law.

The 2005 Legislature approved the smoking ban, which covers most public buildings and workplaces in the state. Bars, enclosed truck-stop areas and tobacco shops are exempt. It does not ban smoking near building doorways.

The City Council had considered restrictions on smoking at bars, hotels, bowling alleys and truck stops. It also considered banning smoking within 25 feet of doorways and windows.
