Montana's adoption of a statewide smoking ban this year made it the eighth state in the nation to go smoke-free.

"We made the top 10,'' said Dr. Robert Shephard, a Helena physician and longtime advocate of smoking bans.

"I think we're in pretty good shape.''

Shephard discussed the ban and the health effects of secondhand smoke Friday at Deaconess Billings Clinic. He was the featured speaker at a luncheon lecture series for doctors, nurses and other health care staff.
