Hawai`i becomes the 14th state in the country to ban smoking in almost all public places. It is designed to protect people from the health problems from secondhand smoke.

The no smoking signs are required to be nearly everywhere. The state is banking on signage to keep people from lighting up.

"Our aggressive approach will be in education and information and not so much in looking to fine people. If folks don't have a sign, we'll give them a sign. If folks don't understand the law, we'll explain the law," said Julian Lipsher of the Department of Health.
